Participatory design of people-centered cities – How to shape the future we want? Young urban experts´ take on the steps needed ahead.
By Josefine Fokdal, Franziska Schreiber and Astrid Ley

This paper is the outcome of a three-day future workshop commissioned by the Robert Bosch Foundation that took place from 15 – 17 February 2021, involving around 20 students and alumni of the MSc Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design (IUSD) as young urban change agents.

Based on an assessment of the current state of participatory approaches in the fields of urban research, practice and education, the paper offers concrete suggestions for how to strengthen participatory and transformative processes through innovative methods, new interlinkages and capacity development in these fields.

It further includes recommendations for future strategy development of institutions and funding agencies aiming to become leading voices in the urban transformation towards people-centered cities.
