IUSD Lecture: „Slum Upgrading and environmentally sustainable interventions in sub-Sahara Africa“ / Dr. Olumuyiwa Adegun

We are welcoming Dr Adegun, out current researcher, for a lecture on his ongoing work. Slums and Informal settlements within cities in sub-Sahara Africa are characterized by social and environmental problems. To address these challenges, interventions often include forced eviction and clearance, re-blocking, regularisation, relocation to new housing development, in situ upgrading. This lecture x-rays shortcomings and opportunities regarding environmental sustainability within these interventions and upgrading approaches with cases from South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Olumuyiwa Adegun is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Architecture, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria, and currently a Visit-ing Researcher (within the framework of DAAD ClimapAfrica Programme) at Chair of International Urbanism, University of Stuttgart. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (Wits), South Africa, with a thesis on „Just Sustainability at the nexus of Informal Settlement Intervention and Green Infrastructure “. Dr. Adegun´s scholarly interests are in environmental sustainability in urban areas of sub-Saharan Africa, especially with respect to low-income housing, such as slums and informal settlements.
