IUSD Lecture: Overview on recent projects and ideas for urban development of Muscat Capital Area (MCA) / Dr Wolfgang Scholz

For our next IUSD lecture, it gives us great pleasure to welcome Dr Wolfang Scholz. His presentation will provide an overview on selected recent projects and trends of urbanization in MCA.

First the Omani National Spatial Strategy (ONSS) as long-term planning approach will be presented, followed by a recent survey of the author (in collaboration with GUtech and funded by Omani Research Council) on housing needs of Omani citizens in MCA and finally some results of joint German and Omani students project on greening Wadis.

Dr. Wolfgang Scholz graduated in 1992 in Spatial Planning, TU Dortmund University. After working for private urban design studios in Germany for 10 years, he re-entered academia and received in 2006 his PhD on informal urbanization in Tanzania. In 2012, he was appointed as Associate Professor at the German University of Technology in Oman. From 2014 to 2018, he served as Head of the Department of International Planning Studies in Dortmund, and from 2019 to 2020 he was a guest professor for international urban development at the Faculty of Architecture in Darmstadt. Currently, he conducts research on resilient urban development in Manila.
