“Urbanisation in Namibia“

Foundational myths, colonial legacies, spatial transformation

Like other countries in Africa Namibia is urbanising rapidly in the absence of industrialisation and formal economic growth.

This ongoing socio-spatial trans­formation is permeated with foundational myths of virgin land, colonial violence, spatial legacies of seg­regation and inequality, continued delegitimisation of the urban poor and their resistance through pres­ence and resourcefulness.
