Helena Cing Deih Sian: Being in Place. Longing for Heritage in Yangon, Myanmar
Linden Museum Stuttgart
7 May – 30 October 2022
Exhibition Opening
Friday, 6 May 2022, 4.30 pm
Helena´s work examines the contemporary significance of the architectural heritage in Yangon/Myanmar. Focusing on the relationship between spatial environment and political development, the exhibition questions the contested spatial and social aspects of the ideological narratives of the military dictatorship.
It especially highlights outstanding cases of what might be called an official Myanmar version of „damnatio memoriae“. Already excluded from official accounts, and some also threatened by demolition, the 14 sites in Yangon that are being presented in this exhibition symbolize counter-narratives of the civilian efforts for democracy and freedom.
Wishing to establish a culture of remembrance for Yangon, Helena invites visitors to participate and contribute their thoughts.
This travelling exhibition will then be shown in cities with large Myanmar diasporas: Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg.
