Astrid Ley takes part in a public hearing of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development on Wednesday, 16 December 2020: “Urbanization in Africa – Challenges for Development Cooperation”.
The session addresses two topic blocks: Forecasts until 2050 and instruments of shaping urbanization in Africa, including its economic and political effects (topic block A), and challenges and expectations from partners in African countries (topic block B).
Astrid Ley contributes a discussion paper to topic block A based upon three main theses:
1) Urbanization in Africa and the challenges associated with it form a process that needs to be strongly differentiated intraregionally.
2) The necessity for infrastructure development requires wise direction and a balancing act.
3) The immense need for affordable housing, economic productivity and infrastructure overlooks the significant contribution already made by informal settlement development and the informal sector.
The session will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.bundestag.de
