In this design studio, we will study the correlation between urban form, governance, and collaborative action within neighborhood transformation projects which emerged as a response to the pandemic.
The current pandemic has brought the neighborhood scale to the heart of the discussion on quality of life and community resilience. This revival of the neighborhood as a vital unit in urban planning required the rethinking of notions such as sociability, proximity and public life, as well as the redefinition of the urban professionals’ role in ensuring a healthy and livable city. While cities are still enduring the economic and social ramification of the outbreak, communities have come up with novel ways to adapt to this situation.
In this design studio, we will look closely at the social and spatial dynamics within a selected number of neighborhoods in the Baden-Württemberg region, with the aim to analyze community adaptation tactics and design strategies for more resilient neighborhoods.
Studio Structure: Key input will be provided by tutors and external lectures on discourses relevant to the studio, which will be followed by intensive tutoring. Students will work in groups of two (maximum three if necessary). Each group will have the possibility to select a site from the catalogue provided by the tutors.
Furthermore, each group will get the opportunity to take a thematic approach of their choice at the beginning of the studio.
