Tell me where home is!

The seminar aims to provoke wider reflections on what ‘home’ means in an era of rapid urban transformation and transnational and translocal mobility. What does it mean to call a place home? Where do we locate belonging in today’s fluid, contested, and fragmented transnational landscapes? The seminar aims to provoke wider reflections on what ‘home’ means in an era of rapid urban transformation and transnational and translocal mobility. This seminar is offered to master students to critically unpack the concept of home from multiple theoretical, methodological, and creative perspectives.

Students will examine how notions of home are lived, conceived and perceived in different contexts. Through selected readings, discussions, and reflections, we will unpack questions such as: How is home constructed? How do individuals reconfigure home? What does belonging mean for those living in transition? Alongside theoretical explorations, students will engage in creative and empirical inquiries, experimenting with diverse methods such as mapping, photo essays, sound recording, data sculptures and visual storytelling. Through this approach, students will deepen their theoretical understanding, enhance their methodological skills, and experiment with interdisciplinary practices.

Selected parts of the seminar output will be shared in the upcoming exhibition ‘Tell me where home is’ opening in September 2026 at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg.

The lectures and tutorials will be conducted in person. Students will work individually and in groups throughout the semester engaging in a critical reflection during group tutoring sessions in presence. Additionally, some lectures and workshop inputs from experts around the world supporting the content of the seminar will be held over WebEx. ILIAS as well as Conceptboard will serve as the platform for exchange. All tools are available for free.
